As part of finishing my ‘first’ career I stopped working ‘for’ people and started working ‘with’ them – and that made a big difference. I work for myself now, doing what I want. Sometimes I get paid, sometimes not – what is important is that I make a difference.

Moving on from education to the world of work can be daunting for many. The fear of making the ‘wrong’ move and that leads to inaction which carries hidden costs. If you want to be a tennis superstar then you need to show great promise by the age of five or it may already be too late. Don’t contemplate joining the army after you’re 30 and you need to be pretty clear about having a career in medicine by your 21st birthday or again you may be too late. That said some careers, notably the law and politics, are open to people of any age. My advice – pick a possible career, do your research and if it still what you want to do then go for it. If it doesn’t live up to that early promise then work out a transition plan.

Someone starting work today can expect to work until the age of 90. During that time they are likely to have four or five careers. The transition point between each is your call move when you are ready…
